My Special Prayer Space

Kate Nicholas • May 27, 2021

After ending up in hospital with sepsis after my first chemotherapy treatment, the dosage has mercifully been reduced. And on day 11 of the second cycle, I managed to get out of the house and walk up to my very special prayer space which I want to share with you.

This folly was built high up in the fields above the village of Weston Underwood in Northern Buckinghamshire by the Throckmorton family in 1753. And became the haunt of the poet William Cowper who lived in the village in the later 18th century. Cowper, author of the 'The Task' is best know for co-authoring the world famous Olney Hymns which local curate John Newton, whose immortal anthem of hope Amazing Grace continues to be sung around the world.

Over the past twenty years, I have walked here nearly every morning and spent time in prayer looking out a landscape that has changed little since the 18th century. It is here surrounded by God's creation that I often feel closest to him.

Do you have a special place that you go to pray? I would love to hear about it.
